Our 8th semester thesis project was a three-way collaboration between GIZ (the client, a German development agency), the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department and Srishti Films. The brief was to design visitor experiences within Nature Interpretation Centers at three sites assigned to us in Himachal Pradesh - the Shimla Water Catchment, the Kufri Zoo and the Manali Nature Park.
The Shimla Water Catchment is an enormous catchment area that has been supplying water to the city of Shimla with minimal human intervention since British rule. The multimedia infographic which I worked on with my teammates, Vaidehi Patil and Sakshi Joshi, aims to generate curiosity and inform visitors of the catchment about the same. 

The infographic is designed to be installed at the entrance of the catchment where tourists come for treks or bicycle rides. It illustrates how water enters the catchment as precipitation, seeps underground and subsequently emerges out of the aquifers as springs, naturally filtered by soil. The underground cast iron pipes then deliver the water to the city of Shimla, post a second level of filtration at the treatment plant. In addition to this, the catchment is a sprawling deodar forest which supports a diverse ecosystem of animals, birds, butterflies and various medicinal plants and herbs. The installation thus visualises the interconnections between the vast, visible landscape, and the invisible, underground flow of water.

The illustrations were derived from the Chamba Rumal style of embroidery native to Himachal Pradesh.

Aside from the infographic installation, I also worked on creating a logo to unify all of our projects at the Water Catchment.&#38;nbsp;

The brief was to create a book (using experimentation with typography) out of the lyrics of a song, for which I chose Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches. The constraint was to use one colour and two typefaces.

I wanted the imagery to be that of a medical cross when the accordion book is fully unfolded.

Pre-Thesis Project Brief

“Images are constructed representations that reflect current events yet simultaneously shape ways of imagining the world and political possibilities within it. As formative fictions, images have consequences and play a role in world making. For the large numbers who see them, images are part of how we construct not just our points view, but our very understanding of the world at large in which we formulate our points of view. They influence us today and have an impact on the way we will assimilate that which we have not yet seen but might see tomorrow.”

Images are ubiquitous, increasingly becoming volatile and are a critical component of contemporary visual culture, and they are complex cultural products. In these times with oversaturated imagery, questions such as 

What is behind the image? How do you read an image?What is the politics of the image?What are the lenses one uses to ‘see’ images?become pertinent to visual professionals.The project is focused in understanding the dynamics of static imagery, under the umbrella of ‘the city’.

	Research for Projects
Shola Forests and Tribal Communities of the Nilgiris 
This is some of the research I did on how the ancient Shola forests of the Nilgiris have been replaced by highly water-intensive and invasive species like eucalyptus and wattle, which has also impacted the local, indigenous people who rely so heavily on the forests. 
Tourists that visit the hill stations in masses (from neighbouring states such as Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh) can be sensitised to have empathy towards both the native people and the native biodiversity of the place that they come to enjoy. This can be done through participatory eco-tourism.

This project was a response to a tender put out by the Karnataka State Department of Horticulture (KSDH) to design branding and packaging that would unify all honey and hive products made in Karnataka. The brief was to break through clutter in the existing market, promote local, and encourage sophistication and health.&#38;nbsp;

There has been a long history of honey collection in the Western Ghats and Malnad region of Karnataka - comprising Hassan, Chikmaglur, Coorg and Shimoga. Coorg honey is so famous that it is an intrinsic part of the local culture and folklore, with the honey collectors singing songs during harvest. It is also home to several bee nesting trees. The diversified bee-flora in Southern Karnataka (forests as well as agri-horticultural crops) supports bee-keeping throughout the year. 
Tribal communities, such as the Jenu Kurubas (which directly translates to ‘honey collectors’) scale rock cliffs to access the hives of Apis dorsata, or the rock bee. Their philosophy includes the belief that honey from their forests are sacred.&#38;nbsp;

Based on the level of processing, honey can either be raw (natural and pure, often granulated or chunked) or processed, when it is heated and bottled, which often results in the loss of vitamins. Raw honey also contains 4.3% more antioxidants and improves liver function.Monofloral honey, according to industry standards, is honey in which 50% of nectar is collected from one type of flower. These types of honey have distinctive tastes and aromas that relate to the source flower.Multifloral honey on the other hand is derived from bees that pollinate multiple flowers, and often has several different tasting notes.

	I chose the Sanskrit word ‘Sasvata’ for the brand name, which signifies ‘eternity’, for two reasons - firstly, honey itself never spoils and sustains life by boosting immunity, and secondly, the occupation of honey collection is traditional and is often passed down generationally through families.In order to stay away from the usual imagery of bees associated with honey, I placed a pattern of bees in the background and chose to highlight the honey collector of the Jenu Kuruba tribe, honouring their tradition and keeping the people at the centre of the brand.
Some of the competitor brands I studied for this project were The Last Forest, and Honey and Spice.
